Smile Voltage Regulator

I have a 2003 320E class diesel and I think the voltage regulator has failed. A friend of mine works in Bosch altenator plant and said the brushed wear out at 90,000 miles, mine has done 89,000. I have cheked the voltage when running and I only get 12V, the sytem flashed up a message on the command to say "shutting down to preserve battery" shortly after the battery was down. I charged up and then made the checks as described.

My question is can the voltage regulater be replaced on this model without removing the alternator, looks a bit tight and there is some king of air duct behind it, does this have to come off first? Also should I disconnect the battery first and will the command have some kind of reset code if battery removed.

If anyone can help, thanks.

Hey, Cam, welcome aboard.

Please click the user cp link and complete your BW profile for vehicle and location as that is often useful information. Also, it's probably better to post questions about your car in your vehicle's native forum (W211) rather than in the introduction area.

I'll share what little I know, because I don't think we got your car in diesel in the US that year but if you have the L6 diesel you should be able to get the regulator out with the alternator in place. It is tight, though, for me the extra bit of effort to remove the alternator first would be worth it, that way you can more easily see exactly what you're doing and keep things a bit cleaner. For the V engines you have to remove the alternator anyway, which really isn't that difficult anyway, just have to buy the E-torx bits for the socket set. Either way, naturally disconnect the batteries before you begin, be sure the key is not in the ignition when you disconnect or reconnect batteries.

Your radio code should be in your owner's manual, else get it from the dealer, you'll need the VIN. However if you have COMAND I think it has an internal battery, so long as it's not physically disconnected you may be fine. There are some other things that will have to be synched, check the manual for those.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
