At the risk of sounding like a new AA member, let me introduce myself.
About 10 years ago, I purchased a used 450sel. Having owned sports cars previously, this was to be my road car in New Mexico. I drove it for about 3 months and then put it in storage. So much for plans.
After 7 years of storage, I finally had it's minor failings corrected and drove it around town and to the airport. Low mileage, easy to care for comfortable and stylish transportation. So what if the paint on the hood top and trunk was down to primer
The sides still looked good. Moved to Miami by this time.
So after some replacements and some bad mechanics and more replacements of replacements (window regulators and AC and climate control), complaints from friends on the interior temperature, etc. I still loved the car. It was big, it was fast, it was comfortable for a 6' 4" driver, it starts every time, and most of all, it was paid for and much more interesting than the new alternatives. My friends drive BMWs, Lexus and newer MB, but I do not feel they have a better car. If I had to drive 50 miles/day, it might be different, but fortunately my commute is 5 minutes.
So move forward a few years. I'm in the bay area of CA. Can't resist the idea of a 2 seater. Nothing more interesting in the affordable category than a 107. Almost bought a 450sl but dealt with a sleazy buyer. Ended up with an 88 560sl at a very good price. Just took it on a trip through the wine country and must say I LOVE IT!
So, you could say, in spite of the negative press and knowledge of the weak points, I am a fan of Mercedes 107.
if anyone has an answer to 107 addiction, please respond.
