2000 CL500

Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to get into the Benz world. Right now I have a Z3 Coupe but I came across a 2000 CL500 (dream model) for 8k. The car has a clean title, everything is cool except the milage. It has 126k which isn't even that bad for that year but i've never had a car with those kind of miles before. Anyone have any thoughts on whether this is a good deal & whether i should even be risking buying a car with so many miles?
It has pretty standard options, which is a lot anyway, no sport package or anything like that. Any advice is appreciated, and if you don't think its a good idea please tell me what you think I should look for when buying one of these. Thanks.

The fact that this car sold for around $100K new and is now for sale at $8K is a big clue.

126K miles is nothing if the car was dealer maintained, but the $8K figures suggests it wasn't. Too bad.

Assuming it was dealer maintained alll the way through (hypothetically) does everyone agree 126k is no big deal when it's all said and done?

I, too, think there may be something more to this car if the asking price is only $8k. Check around and compare, they are never priced that low even for the mileage which isn't a huge deal is well cared for. I have come to realize that when people undervalue their car so greatly it's either (a) a scam of some sort, usually out of state and no car actually exists, or (b) the owner knows there's a major problem with the car and by selling it for lower than market value feels justified in not disclosing the problem/imminent problem.

Have it gone over by a competent and knowledgeable mechanic, and one who knows these cars specifically. By that I mean the CL, not just Mercedes-Benz.

I don't want to kill your enthusiasm for this car but I'd hate to see you get stuck on a raw deal because you were excited about a dream car that could easily become a nightmare considering the considerable costs of repair for these top of the line cars.

This car should be avoided at all costs. This won't be your dream car for long after you get your first $2000 airmatic failure bill. This was the first year for this body style CL, and it wasn't a good one. In fact, it was one of the worst.

Agreeing with most of the others here. In addition to the mandatory pre-purchase imspection, ask for the service history. If there isn't one, or if sketchy like lots of gaps between services, run don't walk.

If you have the means or the patience to wait and save a bit more I really do advise you to look for a newer/less sketchy CL that you truly will be happy with. I'm sure we would all prefer to see you on the forums telling us how much you love your car, not what a horrible experience it's been. CL's are magnificent machines and if you choose the right one, will be the last car you ever need to buy, so it's worth the extra start up cost.

The car was actually offered by a family member. he has wayyyy too many cars and this 1 has been sitting for the last 4 months. It's one of his older ones. He says it's clean, i'm going to run a carfax and bring it to a good mechanic regardless, but with that being said is it possible i'm just getting a good deal because of family? The main thing i'm concerned with is the miles to be honest with you, but if everyone says that as long as it was maintained 100% 126k is nothing, then i'll probably buy it. Thanks for all the help!

Yes it is possible the price is contingent entirely upon your relationship, my parents used to sell their old cars to family or people they knew who couldn't afford a good car for $100 just to help them out! I bought one of my early cars for $1. I think this changes the dynamics of this thread somewhat so my opinion now is (a) check the service records to be sure work was done, (b) go to the dealer for a VMI (Vehicle Master Inquiry) for all work that was done on the car, (c) and have it inspected. If it stands up to all of these checks, I'd probably go for it personally.

A 126k miles is a lot of miles for a unreliable repair prone 00 CL. You better have a good credit card and a good relationship with a service shop if you get this car.
