I just signed up.
I am originally from Germany (Munich area) but live since almost 12 years in the US. With a brief interruption (San Diego), I spent most of my time in Windy City and the Chicago suburbs.
I currently own a '67 250SL with one previous owner and 53,000 miles on the clock. At the moment I am toying with another MB as my daily driver; my preference would be a low mile W123 300TD wagon but due to my "Boss's" dislike for wagons I am also considering a W126 or W123 diesel sedan.
I have a decent history with MB:
1990 (Munich) - '79 200D with 400,000 km and a brand new rebuilt engine; probably the best car I ever owned. After driving it for about 3 years mostly commuting between Munich and Zurich I was rear ended by a British Airways stewardess in a rental car; I fixed it and drove it for another six months to sell it to a guy that exported German cars to the former Soviet Union satellite countries like Poland; I still got more for it than I initially paid
1993 (Munich) - '77 220D; turned out to have a compression problem on the 3rd cylinder; sold it to a friend who didn't care and drove it for another 2 years as a city car
1998 (San Diego) - '67 250SL; after moving from Chicago to San Diego I found this car in Chicago, 1 owner all original and no rust: dark maroon (460) with beige (181) hard top top; had it shipped from Chicago to SD
1998 (San Diego) - '83 300SD with 360,000 miles and zero rust; owned by a pastor who supposedly drove every day 110 miles (one way!) to his parish. Encountered a turbo seal leak driving it from SD to Illinois and decided to replace the whole engine (thanks to eBay
; drove it for another year when finally the A/C died; donated the car which was probably a mistake
(not donating, but given that everything else was still working fine, I could still drive it today)
2003 - '02 C320 wagon; good car which I traded in 2007 for a Cayenne S to tow some toys
