How long does a transmission last?

I have 217K miles on my 1989 420SEL. No problems so far. How many miles can you get out of an average transmission on this type, and approx how much is a rebuild?

VERY tricky question. While I've driven 300k MB myself with to my knowledge original transmission, the truth is that nobody keeps solid statistics.
On generation of "lifetime fluid" transmissions from late 1990 it is coming as a joke that those who do fluid change regardless recommendation seem to have more transmission failures than those who drive them 300, 000 miles on original fluid.
Read lot of disputes in the archives and good luck on making sense out of it.

Change the fluid and filter every ~25,000, (or whatever it states in the owners manual, I forget what it said) and you should be trouble-free for at least 250,000mi.

The key is to use good quality ATF, like Mobil-1 synthetic or AMSoil, and get that filter changed with every fluid renewal.

A rebuild for one of these runs ~$1200-$2500. There are a few replacements you can do yourself, like the B2 piston. Do a search in the W126 forum for more information.
