Brake Warning Lamp

My '87 560SL has been in storage since December. I only drove it around the parking lot about once a month during the winter, but the snow finally melted in Chicago, and it was time to hit the road!

The brake warning lamp went on immediatly, and has been "acting-up". It would go on and off with different light intensity, but not directly related to whether I am braking.

Then it went off completely, but would return with more or less intensity with
lower or higher rpm's, never touching the brake pedal.

The fluid level is OK, about one half inch below maximum, and there doesn't appear to be any problem with the brakes.

Seems strange to me. Anyone had a similar experience?

I had a similar problem on my S500C. The cause was corrosion in the connector to the sensor on the brake fluid reservoir. Cleaned it up, and no problem since.

Are you talking about the low brake fluid light or the exterior burned out bulb light?

There are two brake lights, the red brake warning lamp(owners manual #23), the yellow brake pad wear indicator lamp(owner manual #22). There is also the yellow exterior light failure indicator lamp(owners manual #17). My problem is the red brake warning lamp.

I will take a look at the sensor connector.

The red brake warning light tells you two things:
1. Parking brake is engaged or
2. Brake fluid is low.
There are two chambers to your brake fluid reservoir. You can often times be fooled into thinking that the reservoir is full when in fact the rear chamber might be low. You might have to jiggle it or shine a light on the reservoir to verify that you have the correct fluid level. Also one of the two sensors could be bad or sticking.

I filled the reservoir to maximum, and cleaned the sensors. I am not sure which worked, but the light is out!

Thanks for your help guys!

I thought that might be a litt too obscure Dr. Strangelove reference(your picture). I am a bit of a movie fan, and movie quote fan, and the president, Peter Sellers says to the group assembled, "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the war room!"
