Unhappy A new beginning in reliability?

Going through uni the usual low budget issues meant I could only ever really afford cars around £500.

Other than one i wrote off the other 2 both eventually suffered from catastrophic engine failure (ok - im a programmer it wasn't catastrophic but it it devastated my wallet ). I won't go on.

Any way, time went by and as a grad present my parents helped me get some money together to buy the A-Class i now have (immensely love and wish to keep for at least another year or two).

Its a diesel and the first diesel I ever had (fuel prices + recession etc) and as such am still getting used to the differences (not many, but still)

Any ways cutting a long story short, I noticed a few problems and hence joined the internet's foremost authority on the subject

The problems are:
A) If i put my foot down and accelerate hard (i.e when overtaking) white smoke comes out the exhaust (i hear this may be to do with the head gasket)

B) secondly when i come off the motorway, i sometimes see a small amount of white smoke (not that thick or anything) coming from under the bonnet/hood. Seems like its may be from below the rocker cover or lower, but its hard to tell.

c) Finally I don't think its running as economically as its supposed to (though the biggest engine i had before this was 1.4 so I may be wrong). Its weird though, as I once did 30 miles to work (and 30 back) at a fairly consistent speed on the motorway and the needle barely moved. Then I did less than that around central London (no harsh accelerating or anything) and used a quarter of fuel...!? That surely isn't normal.. is it??

Any ways, other than that the car's superb to drive and i really want to look after it, but on a recent graduate budget, I really need to avoid being ripped off by mechanics etc..

I really need some advice
