Where is VIN/engine # stamped on actual body other than firewall?

I have been reading lately about the problems with "cloned" vehicles. I recently purchased a 2002 SLK320, and while I purchased it from a reputible dealership, I still want to do some checking on my own. "Cloning" is the process in which valid VIN plates, stickers, etc., are placed on stolen vehicles for what appears to be legitimate titling and registration purposes.

I searched but didn't find anything on this subject. Please forgive me if this thread is repetitive.

I am looking for the location of the VIN stamping (other than the firewall) and engine number. Also, is there any way to verify the vehicle's identity other than these methods?

Any and all input would be greatly appreciated.

You can check the VIN with our Russian friends (click "Mercedes Benz VIN" at the top of this page). It will tell you the car built to that VIN, including color, options, build date, engine serial number, and everything else you will need to identify whether the car you have is the car built with that VIN.

I'm not sure the VIN is stamped all over the body, but it is on a sticker at the front edge of the hood and in the door jamb, I think.

Checking the options against the vehicle data card is a good idea. Your user manual would tell where VIN is printed on your car:

Put your key to ON position. Put the instrument cluster to display mph then press the reset button 3times. Navigate through the cluster, it should display the vehicles VIN#. And that should match to the body.
