My opinion exactly.
Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't that 4-cylinder diesel, that made 2.4 millions miles in ThessalonĂ*ki?
Was it even turbocharged.? That thing was (is?) way below 100 HP

Yes, but it was equipped with Troyan horses.

One question still remains: Does a lower-hp MB last longer and have less issues?
I would venture to say that the inline 6 cylinder M103 motor is a good choice for you. It was available until 1993 in E class cars (w124) and until 1991 in S class (w126). Apart from head gasket issues, it's a sturdy powerplant and relatively inexpensive to service. A bit underwhelming in the 126 variant however.

+1, Low end models are just less complicated. But i think Merc's are cheaper to keep than other "high end" cars, and they last mutch longer! If you just want basic transportation get something else. For reliable quality comfortable driving a Merc is a must
Buy a high production model to be sure that you can find new and used parts later in the cars life..

And naturally, all of you are right: simpler is better.

No sweat Joe. I was thinking about rebuttal like "Trojan horse was a fake" but it doesn't matter now.
Funny thing I just bough Audi quatro for my youngest. Went on Audi forum and the first long post I run into stickies was about modification. The author stated that 400 HP mods on those engines are quite "normal" while "there are 900 HP mods out there"
That was applying to 2.8 liter V6. Obviously Audi owner don't mind to rebuild their engines every year. It is scary World out there
