new MB 16V owner

Just bought my first Benz. 1987 190E 2.3-16.
It needs a good amount of work. Its got 117,042 miles and it's an automatic in Smoke silver. The previous owner had it lowered and had AMG stickers ALL over it. He also had a different hood on it. One very good thing is its been a California car its whole life and it has no rust on it anywhere ...bad thing it's a salvage title.

This is where I found it (and a good picture of the fiberglass hood it had on it).

This is right after I got it home and washed it up a bit.

So far, I have fixed a few things on it and replaced the hood with a 16V hood (wrong color but the car needs to be painted anyway). I scraped off all of the AMG stickers and removed the AMG badges that were stuck on the body kit. It already looks much better.

My plans for it are changing daily it seems. One minute I am ready to do a complete restore on it, the next I am ready to part it out. I don't know exactly what I will do with it. Currently I am just going to keep plugging along fixing what needs to be fixed and keep it for sale in case some other motor enthusiast wants to have it.

Welcome to Benzworld

LOL it had a W126 coupe hood on it and AMG badges everywhere. WTF was the clown thinking???? Good job on bringing back some class to the Mercedes my friend. You just have to raise it a little just in the rear and I think it'll be much better.

Thanks, and yes it is too low. It has Eibach springs on it. I would have left it alone had I had the choice to lower it or not.

Well, I think it may be best for me to sell her. I wanted a project car to tinker with but I am feeling a bit overwhelmed with this one. Its pretty complicated for an older car. I am impressed with MB and their level of engineering but I think I'm in over my head on this one.

Don't get discouraged. It is not that hard to work on these. I have three of them and have rebuilt the head on each one (only one actually had a bad valve, the others were the consequence of my daughter driving one with a stuck thermostat and it overheated and blew the head gasket, while the other was a very complicated chain box fiasco my youngest son experienced while driving home from Purdue University last Spring - gotta take the head off to get to the chain box....). The car and the engine are pretty rugged. One of mine has over 250K miles on it, the other about 200,000 and the third about 165,000. If the body is solid they are worth the effort.

Make a list, and go at it slowly. Ask for help and advice as you need it. Good luck, Jim

I do have a list going, it just seems when I can cross one item off, I have added three more to it..haha.
I do really like the car and I am anxious to drive it.
I'll keep plugging along and fixing it up, but if someone shows up with cash I may let her go...we'll see.
