I've always wanted one, now I have one.
I remember a boyhood conversation with my father at around five or six years old. I pointed out a nice looking car with the famous tri-star hood orniment and told him I liked that car and every car I saw with that three pointed star on it. I asked him if we could get a hood orniment like that for our 65 Ford Station Wagon, not knowing anything about cars at the time.
He told me a bit about automotive branding and how it wouldn't be right to put that Mercedes Benz emblem on the Ford Wagon. He said that I had made a great choice in cars to like and hoped I would be able to have one some day making it clear that some hard work would be necessary to get one someday.
Well, life went on and many vehicles of necessity passed through my ownership. In order to reduce the carbon footprint my Duramax Diesel truck makes commuting between southern Oregon and Ventura California, I had the oppertunity to buy a used 1998 SLK 230 Sport in Silver. I remember this car and the MB Star catching my eye again when it was new.
I've had the car for about a year and a half now and have been loving it. A great looking convertable roadster cruising the SoCal beaches that doubles as a solid, stylish hardtop commuter on the 10 hour I-5 drive while getting 23-24 MPG. She was a former Star Mark car with 70K on it in the hands of the second owner when I got her. On the last road trip I finally lost a headlamp bulb on the way home. I got the replacement bulbs and was just tinkering with her today.
The car is absolutely stock. I have a boost gage that I was thinking about installing, which led me here to BenzWorld. This forum has already been very helpful and informitive about many searched subjects from the gage installation to SC pullies, to Chips.
You know what? Now that I have one of these cars, I'm thinking that she has made it to 80K in awesome shape without any mods, I might just enjoy her for what she is, as she is and put the boost gage in the Duramax. But I will come back here often and see what is going on in SLK and AMG land.
Thanks for having me in,
