The reason why it is almost always a bad idea to jump new cars is that 99.9% of people don't know how to do it correctly (like it or not, MOST people don't even know how to open their hood). Improper grounding or electrical surges can damage $1000's worth of computers on newer cars in just seconds. If you know how to do it correctly, you can do it safely....but the average Joe doesn't so don't try it. Get a battery jump box (which has a controlled output, doesn't require another car, and is almost idiot proof) or a 12v lighter reverse charger.

I jump stared our different Mercedes on at least 3 occasions and never had any problems. But years ago I "invested" in heavy jump cables with #2 wires and very strong clamps that actually can run the starter on additional battery alone, while the common #10 cables are only good as a helpers. Making sure the clamps are placed on clean connectors helps as well.
On my Ford pickup I was welding dump bed without disconnecting anything. 1999 Ford has less electronics, but week long welding job proved that with ignition off the car computers are safe.
