Post Thinking about buying a 1993 Mercedes 190E...

Hello everyone, I am thinking about buying a 1993 Mercedes 190E. The car has about 120,000 miles on it and a sticker price of $2,900. What does everyone here think of the 1993 190E? How many years can a car like this last and how many miles can the engine sustain before it breaks down on me? The car has a Kelly Blue Book value of about $2,200 so I don't think I will pay much more than that for it. Is this a good buy assuming the car is in good overall condition? Would you recommend me buying this car? I am currently a college student and this would be my first car. Thanks in advance for your help.

'There is nothing more expensive than cheap Mercedes"
You will see that phrase in several places on this forum. The car might be excellent deal for advanced DIY, but can turn disaster for newbie. Too much risk IMHO.

I have read stories of people reaching excess of 300,000+ miles on their Mercedes with only routine maintenance and without any major repairs. What are some major problems I can potentially face if I purchase this car? What are some things I should look out for when I go look at the car? If I can get this car for about $2,200 and get 80,000 miles out of it without any major repairs I would be really happy.

Go to the proper section for more specific answers.
The risk with buying $2000 Mercedes is what you do when the $5000 transmission fails?
My friends junked $6000 Mercedes because the timing chain broke.
On the other hand -having time to spare you can take a risk and if the car fails -parting it out might bring much more than $2000

A great starter Benz -- I had a 1986 190E 2.3 with a manual tranny, still regret selling it.
But, as noted above condition is paramount as repairs can be pricey.
If you can do your own repairs, parts are reasonable online.
If you're paying dealer prices, forget it -- just one major job could easily equal 50% of the purchase price!
