Typo or loss leader?

Got a flyer in the mail from Autobahn Motors in Belmont (Ca) touting accessory discounts and service specials. Typical "bargains" like the 3 for 1 special, new wiper blades, "fluid check" and the "safety inspection" for $50 plus tax. Yeah, that's a real bargain, especially when the safety inspection reveals a laundry list of issues for resolution for anywhere between $1,000 and $4,000 (or more).

But two things leapt from the page. Both a coolant flush and brake flush for $100 plus tax, which is half what a good indie in this area charges and barely double the cost of OEM fluids necessary to do the job.

The other one makes me think it is a typo. Oil and filter change "1997 Models or Newer" for $35 (4-cyl), $40 (6-cyl), $45 (8-cyl) and $50 (12-cyl). Usually these prices are for MY 1997 and *older* with a footnote that newer model services are available at higher prices; heck, you can't even buy nine quarts of spec oil (much less the filter) for $50.

I may succumb to the flush special (I'm due and have waste-disposal issues) and would probably press them for an oil change at that price if I were anyplace close to being due before their deal expires.

Most shops and dealer service departments are significantly busier due to people keeping and repairing their cars instead of replacing them, so I can't believe they are that slow they need a flood of business.

I think I'll call Monday to schedule the flush and will seek clarification of the oil change pricing (really I am baffled by that).

Take care and enjoy the ride,

Wow, I wish I lived in CA and could stop in. That is really cheap. They must be using recycled oil and not changing your oil filter or something along those lines.

A long time Mercedes dealer North of Balto. City area has seen a drastic drop in service business. Folks are not paying the high prices for routine service intervals and are putting off other service until absolutely necessary.

Great price for the flushes!

I guess in California people are doing the opposite. Before I could drive to my dealer in the morning and get a loaner car without a scheduled appt. Now you have to call days in advance. My Assistant Service Manager has been working everyday from 7am to 7pm when they close. People are keeping their cars out here in OC Calif and paying to maintain them either by the dealer or indy shops. I took my car in for the drivers seat belt making a very loud noise and to replace my serpentine belt as part of my proactive maintenance. I am almost at 100k miles and turns out the belt was starting to show some wear on it. They fixed the seat belt issue at no charge. It was very crowded with cars being serviced when I dropped her off on Friday. If you don't schedule days in advance you might not get one of their loaner cars.
