Hello From Texas

Just bought my first Mercedes. I've restored several classic cars and have always wanted an older Mercedes to drive the hell out of and work on. Found an 81 380 SLC in a rural area with a sign in the window and bought it on the spot (after driving it and having my mechanic check it out that afternoon). It runs and looks great. I have a few minor repairs to the body and interior but so far it runs super.

Welcome to Texas, i'm not sure if you are in the dallas area but there is a great Mechanic here called David Poole of index

The engines in these cars come with a single row timing chain which is more likely to break. Check the condition of the chain and also to see if it was converted. I believe that many were as part of a recall (needs validation).

With best regards

Al
