Intermittent problem about once per week key in ignition, turn to start, starter cranks, engine won't catch, when key returns to on position starter continues to turn by itself until I turn the key to the off position and check engine light goes stays on. After sitting for 15-30 minutes, will start after cranking for 2 or 3 seconds. All reverts back to normal and eventually yellow engine light goes off. MBZ roadside service (said maybe starter solenoid frozen) and independent (crankshaft position sensor maybe, maybe battery)have no idea. Help please and thanks. (FYI, temps outside in the 40's, intermittent rain)
All E320s with Smart Keys have auto start feature, you insert key turn to start let go, and when the engine starts it turns off the starter. Your roadside guy does not know what he is talking about, if the engine doers not start it will keep on cranking. I think you need to visit the dealer, and draw some codes, maybe fuel or other things the yellow light indicates there is an issue with the engine.
As Peter said the auto start will keep on cranking for about 5 seconds if the engine doesn't start and that is normal way it works.
Engine failure to start is the real problem. Sounds like bad CPS to me, but go to W210 section and read the topics about troubleshooting those engines.
