Wheel swap

I recently (this past weekend) put a set of wheels from an newer E320 on my 99 CLK320. I used the same tires I had (205/55/16), but I know the newer rims are 8" instead of the 7" ones that were OEM. I didn't notice any rubbing/scraping, etc, but wondered if anyone knew of issues by putting on a rim that is 1" wider than what came from the factory? And assuming they are ok, could/should I get a wider tire when it comes time to replace them, say a 215/55/116?

Hey, Miller.

No problem with the wheel in terms of clearance. Unfortunately the width of the new rim is beyond spec for most 205/55 tires (up to 7.5" rim width). I know people play with that stuff; personally I wouldn't, but that's you're choice. I figure the folks that make the tires know what they are talking about, and tires (and the way they seat on the bead) are far too important to take chances with, at least IMHO.

You should be fine with a 215/55-16 (which is the stock W210 tire) as it is just slightly taller than your stock tire and it's fine on the 8" wheel.

However, you said "newer E" and if that means a W211 (2003 and newer) then you also need custom lug bolts. The W211 uses an R14 ball seat, your W208 uses 12M lug bolts. So if you have 211 wheels, you'd need R14x12Mx1.5x26mm custom bolts from radusadirect.com.

If you are using bolts that came with the wheels, then I think you are probably okay, which also means they are W210 wheels. 211 bolts would be too large in diameter for your hubs.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Thanks, Greg - I appreciate the feedback. I'll put a bit wider tire on next time around.

I recvieved lugs from the previous owner, but they were too long. I'm using the lugs from my original wheels, and everything seems ok.
