Hey, Porsche, welcome to the forum. Please take a minute to click the user cp link and complete your BW profile re: vehicle and location as that is often useful information.

Carsoft is much more versatile than a simple OBD-II reader, but to leverage that functionality you also need a multiplexer (about $130 on ebay, usually comes with the software) and a laptop with a dedicated serial (COM) port. Then you plug into the 38-pin diag port under the hood.

Search using membername Kobus and the term Carsoft and you'll find lots of information.

If all you want to do is read codes, clear codes and check emission readiness, the little 94169 code reader from Harbor Freight worls great, comes with a CD of code translations, too. You have to be in N.A. for that as it uses the OBD-II port.

Take care and enjoy the ride,

Dear dporsche

I would concur with Greg210 (Hi Greg) that Carsoft works well but stress that you need a dedicated serial port on you computer.

It helped me to locate a number of problems on my SL500 (R129) and to delete the relevant error codes

It does not work with a USB to serial adapter. Most modern laptops don't have a serial port. You may need to buy an old notebook like a Dell 610 (cheap on Ebay or local computer traders)

It doesn't pick up the Soft Top mechanism on R129's and there are some equipment groups that it doesn't pick up on a W163. There isn't much to pick up on a W202 that I have tried it on.

Don't bother to buy Carsoft 7.6 as the multiplexer designed for 7.4 does not work with it and you can't buy the correct one as far as I know

Good Luck
