97 Mercedes E420 Running Hot

I Have a 97 E420 its running hot,the temp gauge is between 80 and next mark when it hit the next mark the fan came on to cool the engine off i guess but it made a very loud noise, I had thermastat change and it is still at the 80 and above knotch. What else could it be?

See this thread in the W210 forum.

A few other things to check are the auxiliary fan switch and viscous fan clutch.

The auxiliary fan should come on between the partial coupling and full coupling of the viscous fan clutch.

These engines do like to run a bit warmer and there should be quite some info on this if you search around.

About the noise.

Was it a fan noise or water gushing noise? You may take a look at the coolant recovery tank to see if the coolant is moving (boiling). That would indicate a bad coolant recovery tank cap. It costs about $5.
