leaking fuel tank

My name is Ray and I live in Florida. In November, I bought a 2005 E320. The other day the "check engine" notice came on, and they found a leak in the top of my fuel tank, under the rear seat, that was creating fumes. There were no spots under the car in the garage nor odors in the car. He tells me it is plastic---hard to understand how it could get punctured----but the estimate to replace it was over $2400. And it's out of warrante. Could not a plastic tank, with a leak on top, be patched???

I have never seen one repaired but I have changed maybe 6 tanks myself. The leakage is usually in the vapor control area for emissions control and is many times hard to diagnose. There is a charcoal canister shut off valve mounted next to the filler assy. that often is the culprit. If I were you I would contact Mercedes Benz ask for assistance as the repair is quite costly and the failure is nothing you may have caused/ They will usually step up for a part if not the whole ticket. Having a strong service history is to your advantage in cases like this one. If the car has oner 100000 miles forget it though. Bill
