Towing running car behind motorhome

Recently, my wife and I drove our E320 to Florida from PA and back. On the way down, we saw the parade of snowbirds heading south in their motorhomes, towing various cars. One motorhome, from Quebec, was flat towing a w124 300D. The Benz was running! There was quite a bit of smoke coming from the exhaust. Also, the headlights were on. Since it has daytime running lights, the lights would be on. At first, I was mystified. Why would the car be running? Then, it dawned on me. Running the engine would keep the auto trans lubricated. But, towing a running car 2000 plus miles, each way, seems crazy to me! I have towed my 450 SEL about 500 miles, on a dolly when we moved. I disconnected the driveshaft. No big deal. Also, a trailer can be had fairly reasonably. The car was obviously from Quebec as it was fairly rusty, especially around the wheel wells and along the fenders. To each his own, I guess, but I had never seen a running car being towed for such a distance. Can't be good for the engine, right? The smoke was really quite bad! Anyone else ever seen this, or care to comment?

I've never seen that. It is quite stupid. What a waste of fuel and think about all the excess ware and tear! Put the car on a trailer, or at least a tow dolly!!!

We really don't know how far they drug the thing nor what the reasoning for it was. Heck they could have been advised to do that here on these forums. I would hold off sending the men in white suits until all the facts are firmly at hand. To jump to conclusions may well be considered the act of someone with an intelligence issue.

Hey guys that was ME and MY WIFE, the 300D motor in the 124 is powering a 40 kilowatt alternator mounted instead of the transmission. The electricity from the alternator runs the electric motor in my new electric motorhome...

Alright, I'm kidding, but Bill A. is right; we need more details before dismissing this guy as being looney.

Maybe it was just short distance towing? I doubt somebody would do that for 2000 miles.
IMHO the wear on expensive MB tires would pay for the trailer in just few seasons, not to mention that brake systems for toad are almost equal to the price of trailer WITH brakes.
But some people are afraid of driving on the trailers and value easier procedure of towing the car on its wheels.

I guess we really don't know much about the situation. However, the rig was not short distance towing. We stopped for lunch after passing the rig. Later, a full state later, we passed it again! We drove non stop (except for breaks, gas, etc.) from PA to Jacksonville, FL. 75-80 mph most of the time. Day two, we were in the Sarasota area. By the way, we got 29mpg avarage over the trip of 2600 miles. Gotta love it!
