Check engine light and Service E

What indicators effect the check engine light ours came on yesterday then went off after I removed and reset the gas tank cap. I couldn't find anything wrong but after a while the light went off. Also what is a service E I can't find anything on it in the manual and the dealer won't give me a good answer they want to see the car and the check book.

The check engine lamp is tied into most anything that can effect emission release into the atmosphere. There is a sensor in the fuel tank chain that senses pressure build up and release so integrity can be monitored so alas a loose gas cap will cause a lamp to light on the dash. If it se's a return to vapor tightness it will extinguish. A e service is a safety inspection with oil change. Depending on your model and year there are several systems used to report on the cars needs. If you have a late model with service plus the service needs are stored in a computer on board and must be accessed either from the dash assy. of via a computer diagnostic system at the dealer hence he needs to have it first hand to querry the on system. Hope this helps.

I don't have a specific list per say. At 50000 miles it probably needs a oil and filter service, a brake flush, cabin air filters, tire rotation and usually brakes of one type or another. Are you near a dealership?
