Thumbs up Malfunction messages

Hi,
After years of wanting a Mercedes i have finally got one,It,s a 2004 E-class with 36000 mls on the clock, really pleased with the car but i have a problem, the speedo screen says i have 2 malfunctions, when i look at them the first one says
1 emmision inspection performed on time ?
2 Main inspection performed on time ?
I have had it serviced but the messages did,nt disappear and also i have had Auto Electrician look at it and he does,nt know anything either.
Hope someone can help please.
Thanks very much
John

That particular car is a 211 chassis and has a service management system that watches and reports what the cars needs are. If you had it serviced at a dealership they failed to perform a reset in the cluster, if not then you can follow instruction given in the owners manual. I don't remember the page numbers any more. All of the newer models have a sophisticated processor that kept track of the cars needs. I would return the car to the dealership to perform a re-set as it is part of the service you recieved.

The W211 is a VERY sophisticated car and if you're going to pay someone to maintain it for you you should find someone that knows how. It will be cheaper in the long run as you've already discovered in that you've got to go again to have the correct work done when it should have been done correctly the first time.

It's simply belief in mythology that changing oil will somehow magically turn off a warning message.

A real Mercedes mechanic knows how to reset the system and in fact Mercedes publishes the procedure on the Internet.

Actually I got bitten by several early 211's via the dash messages, they can be a real pain in the butt but it is a part of the procedure and needs to be done correctly. The early models used stepped brake wear sensors so the use of an electronic scanner at write up could disclose the need for brake replacement during initial write up on the drive. That system was abandoned early on as no-one had the set up in place to use it.
