My coolant light stays on so how long can I drive the car before putting coolant in?

The light is named an idiot light for a reason. If the light needs to come on, then you have already gone too far. Adding coolant is cheap, takes 1 minute and does not take an advanced technical degree to do so.

If this is less than 1" needed you can add just water (distillate is recommended)
For bigger additions buy MB coolant. If your coolant is old -now is a good time to change it.

You can go for a long time, but I don't think that is a Wise Choice.
Antifreeze/Coolant not only keeps the Engine and Tranny Cool but it also
prevents Engine Freeze.

Antifreeze is like Engine Oil. Add it because it's so darn cheap and when
your Engine/Tranny breaks down, you will kick yourself in the head.

It's what? $7/Gallon for Xerex G-05?

Check your Owners Manual.

Have you checked the coolant level by looking under the hood? There is a lever on the left-side kick panel in the driver's side knee well. Pull that and the hood will unlatch. Then raise the hood slightly by lifting the bottom of the grill. A small plastic 't' will protrude from the top of the grill opening. Pull that and lift the hood. Look to your left at the front of the engine. There should be a large white plastic container. It holds the coolant overflow. There is a raised horizontal line toward the top that is "full hot." There is another line lower down that is "full cold." Depending on whether the engine is warm or not, there should be liquid above the bottom line and at or just below the top line. If the liquid is below the "full cold" line when the engine is cold, you should add MB approved coolant to that line or slightly above it.

The 'check coolant' light should go off after this.

Hope this helps.
