Smee again if anyone is interested on the " W210 key won't turn story"! $AUD2000+ later and a heap of experience to add. First never try to force anything other than very gently as already described trying to get the key to turn (then leave it at Accessories, Position 1). Preventative medicine is the best way to go. At first inkling of a problem, ie, any sticking or litle clunks, have a professional locksmith replace the ign barrel. He can adjust the new barrel to use your old keys. I reckon if the car is used daily for short time trips between locking, ie , the keys are coming in and out a lot, do it anyway after 10 years or 100,000 miles (about 160,000klm). A once a year tiny squirt of graphite powder won't hurt but do nothing which might attract dust of any foreign objects or material. Never try to force the steering , that will engage a roughly one inch by one inch high tensile steel mortise lock in a slot in the steering column and cost you a bomb and a week or so of no car to remedy, that is IF you can find somewone prepared to do it.
I did not know it , but the gear shifter will come out of PARK with the key at the Accessories Position 1 , and your foot on the foot brake. My manual does not tell me this!
