Issue with reverse

Hi all, new here.

I've got a 90 420SEL, and to be honest, it's in rather bad shape. There are a number of problems, but most distressing is an almost total lack of power in reverse. It's been going downhill for some time now and at this point getting it to back up at all is a hit or miss affair. With the car in reverse I can apply the gas and the engine kicks in but I generally have to get it up to at least 6000rpm to get any motion at all, and that's on a level surface.

I figure it has to be something with the transmission, but don't know much beyond that. I'd appreciate any ideas.

Its a bad trans the front clutch pack is worn to the point of slippage, trans has to come out. A dealer (MBfactory) rebuilt is more than your car is worth, maybe you can find an experienced rebuilder.

Yup, reverse is the first to go. You could probably drive the car like that for quite a while till other gears start slipping. You just have to strategically park so that reverse becomes unnecessary.
