question on about changing gears

i often change gears while travelling at about 60 - 80 km/h to lower gears to aid in braking the car more effectively... this is easy to do in a manual car as I can control the gear that it changes to.

however, with the semi automatic car, the gearbox seem to change from say 5 to 3 or 4 to 2 which is the wrong gear (well, in my opinion anyway). would this damage the gearbox?

on some occasions, after the gear changes and i notice that it is the wrong gear, i would then quickly change it to suit. is that ok? again, will this damage the gearbox / programming of the car?

thanks in advance.

On the automatic transmissions, most Mercedes have "dots" on the speedometer dial which indicates the "Maximum" speed at which the transmission gear can be downshifted at, the gear being indicated by the number of dots above the speed. Shifting into a gear above those indicated speeds would likely lead to over revving.

But this was a 2005 car? The electronic transmission control unit would take care of all possible damage scenarios. A different thing if you feel the engine braking being to hard.

But if it is a 5-speed tranny, it should not change more than one gear at a time, except the first time (at least if you keep the gear lever pressed towards lower gear).

Or is it one with the different gears when moving the gear lever forward/backwards instead of sidewise?

I am confused what transmission OP has?
In the past driving manual Fiat I liked to shift it to neutral often for fuel savings. Engaging back to 4-th (highest) gear occasionally I had small grinding. After some time the cheap gear got damaged and I had to replace it. What I did realized during the repair was, that the 4-th gear was connected to the clutch shaft and the synchronizer on this particular gear could not take the added weight.
Presently driving automatics in the mountains I use transmission for slowing down very often. MB does downshifting so smoothly that unless you jump 2 gears it is hardly noticeable.
General rule in engine braking is that you can over-rev it up to 20%. That apply to commercial engines used in trucking and RV. Don't expect MB would take a position on this one.
