I could see it working as an option if it could be mounted to the top of the back window, maybe tucked under a roof spoiler so it's out of sight. Not an option I would desire, but could be done.

Anything is possible but I'd like to see that flat motor and mechanism (I guess you don't want it above the roof and you don't want the roof liner go lower at the rear) and it being serviced from behind the roof liner.

Well, the new MB's have rear cameras. As long as the lens stays clean, and I don't know how that would work, you can see to the rear. My inlaws have a new E350 and it has rear view camera. So, it should help. Actually, it would be easy to add rear view camera to any vehicle. But, how to keep the lens clean, I don't know... unless you could shoot a spray of washer fluid on it from time to time....

Well, after looking into it, it seems that the rear view camera, on new models, only works when the vehicle is in reverse gear. So, it would appear that the on-board camera is useless for looking toward the rear when the vehicle is being driven in the forward direction. The fact that your rear defroster is not working is your greatest problem. Even if there were a wiper on the window, it would not keep the glass clear without defroster. The same would happen on the front windshield (windscreen) without heat being constantly applied. I told my wife about this discussion, and she said, "I just start the car up, turn on the heat in the car, turn on the rear defrost, and go back into the house and drink a cup of coffee. When I am ready to leave, windows are clear, car is warm, and I never have a problem for the rest of the day". So... I guess that's the way it is.!!!
