Blown Engine 3.0 ltr CRD

People FYI,
Apart from contributing to this forum in the W126 section with my loved 500SEL, I also own a 2005 WH 3.0 CRD Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The engine in my Jeep is the same engine used by Mercedes in its ML, C, S E range.

At 110,000 kms (3 years ) I have had a catastrophic engine failure melting a couple of pistons in the process.
I am currently in a battle with Chrysler Australia as vehicles basic warranty has expired and they are not providing financial assistance.

Apparently the ECU controlling the injectors has failed. This can be extremely dangerous in a common rail diesel engine with the immense pressure in the common rail.

I may even contact Mercedes Australia for their thoughts.
Jeep OZ have told me this has happened once before I was wondering if any Mercedes owners have had a similar experience

Sounds like the engine might be a sibling of 320cdi sold in big numbers in USA?
The only problem I had with mine was leaky injector seal, what I posted in W211 section.
Good luck on your claim.

Your correct however they are the same engine know as the 320CDI in Merc land
The 3.0-liter CRD engine is built at the Mercedes-Benz Berlin Marienfelde Plant in Berlin, Germany

68350 miles in 3 years?? That could be the cause of the failure. These are not commercial vehicles. Were you delivering packages or mail with this truck of what?

ha...ha.. few years back, when I was shopping around for BMW, I run into couple from Florida.
Two 2-years old models had 140,000 and 154,000 miles.
I was very tempted to ask the sellers what kind of trafficking they have been into.
Coming back to burn engine. There is forum member -Drivebywire who seems to be very knowledgeable in cdi technology. I would PM him, since he might miss this topic.

Its a vehicle used for work, however with regular servicing that would not be a problem. Living in my part of Australia I do lots of open country driving with all my vehicles.

I'm sure a merc diesel should last a little longer and those type of Km's are not unusual for a company car in Australia

On the "commercial" note. Mercedes sedans are one of the most common vehicle used for taxis in Europe. There is whole thread about it on the forum. Mine 3, actually 4 years old sedan has 146,000 miles on odometer. Used by CEO of heating company in the past.

You would have to be driving 24/7 to get 140-150k miles in 2 years. That is the highest mileage I have ever heard of, besides auto manufacturer in-house testing.

Yes they are, but most are W210, W124 and W123.

Why would you buy a 3 year old car with 146k miles? That is like a Taxi.

Not really. Taxi would be quite beaten up with such mileage, while my car interior show no signs of age (new floor mats) while exterior has no dings and just few rock chips with couple of scratches.
Don't think you will find too many leased Mercedeses with 1/4 of the mileage in better condition.
Still at least 1/2 a mil miles left on the engine.
