1987 300SDL transmission swap
I have a friend that is selling me his 1987 300sdl with 210,000 miles on it. The top of the radiator has a leak. The transmission is also going. He was going to scrap this car and me being a mechanic this a true tragedy that i could not allow to happen. I have not been under the car to inspect transmission id number, but have come to the conclusion this is what they call a 126 type automatic transmission. I have found a few people in the area with used transmissions one of them is a brand new rebuilt w126 type. My question is are all 126 types interchangeable? Will w126 wagon radiator fit in my 300sdl sedan? I am very mechanical so i will be doing all the work, but have very little experience with diesels and no experience working on Mercedes. I was told by someone that he had a w126 transmission but it might have had an ultra low or something so i'm not sure if all 126 tranmissions are the same or can be interchangeable.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I found these numbers on the transmission
126 271 2101 then off to the side w8405
Anyone know what other years or models have a transmission that i can use in this car. How do i know if someone says 126 trans if it will work?
