Post 300 SDL priming pump?

My SDL starts perfectly, even in extreme cold, then after a few seconds begins missing and smoking for 30 seconds or so. After that it runs perfectly. I'm thinking this sounds like the priming pump problem? I hate to spend the $ for a priming pump without some expert opinions. Does this sound like a priming pump issue or is there a check valve somewhere that is allowing fuel to drain back when the engine sits for a while? Also, if I were to put an inline electric pump, would that fix the priming issue. Thanks

What year?
Your symptoms are like leaks in the fuel lines let the air in over the night.
Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the welcome, and sorry to take so long getting back to you. The Benz is an 86. And yes, I also think it sounds like air in the system. It runs like it is priming during those 30-45 seconds. Can you think of a likely place to look, where air could be introduced to the fuel system without also leaking fuel or fuel smell? I recently had the fuel lines and injectors off and hoped my problem would go away. No luck. The good news is that the problem is so fleeting that I can easily live with it... I'm just a bit embarassed by the smoking when it starts up after sitting.
Thanks again.

If I recall it correctly your engine is having rubber hoses carrying fuel from the tank to the priming pump, that rubber hoses connecting to the prefilter, than rubber hose going to main filter and that's where the solid tubing start?
I would start with replacing badly looking rubber hoses or at least checking the clamps. Torquing metal connectors might be good idea as well.

Thanks, I'll start looking in that direction. I really didn't want to spend the money on the priming pump unless there was a good chance that was my problem... so thanks for directing me away. You are right, my car has rubber hoses, as I recall, all the way to the pump. I have never fiddled with them so that would be a good place to start. Have a great holiday.
