Certified Question

I purchased a 2006 E350 Sport 8 months ago. Last week the dealership contacted me and stated the car had never been inspected for certification and that they would refund me $800.00 or inspect the car for certification. At first I was told that I needed to get the car there within the next week. I told them that I would get back with them when I had time. (3 hours away). I am trying to see what other options I have or if anyone else has been through this situation. I feel a bit robbed for paying payments on a non-certified car that I thought I had. I was told that mine is one of three that slipped thru the crack and the person responsible for certification was retired. I have had issues with constant brake screeching and they tell me all E350's do that. Any thoughts on my options or?

I would return the car and demand a full refund. Then I would go to another dealer. I would have serious trust issues with a dealer who sold me a certified car that was never really certified.

Certification is not 'just' an inspection. The dealership is supposed to replace anything found that is questionable. In this case, your brakes are questionable. If it was sold as a certified pre-owned and is not, then I, too, would have serious issues with that stealer.

A business that admits something like this most likely has committed other similar acts, therefore not to be trusted.

I traded in a beautiful 2006 330i sport with 11k miles for this car with 31k. It has everything but I really have a bad taste from this. Should I contact MB Financial first or just tell the dealer that I will be returning to that location? Thanks for any suggestions.

Were you giving the multi-age CPO checklist when taking delivery of the car?

Look, at least this dealer has enough honesty left to admit the error. 8 months later, but still Makes you wonder how many owners paid for certification and still drive with the impression they have CPO.
I am not familiar how the guarantee works on CPO. Is it independent, or combined?
If you like the car, I would cash the $800 and take the car to indy for redoing the brakes.
If you don't like the car -here is your chance to dump it.
Since car delivery for the inspection would cost you loss of 2 days, I would negotiate flatbed pickup, or higher reimbursement.

You don't have to do anything. If your car was represented as CPO and the sales contract says CPO, then the car is CPO. The fact that the car was not inspected is the dealer's problem, not yours. Regardless of whether it was inspected or parts replaced, Mercedes Benz must honor the CPO warranty at any dealership. If they want you to come back to have the car inspected, then they should be willing to pay mileage and any other expenses you may incur such as lodging and food. By the way, the offer of crediting you $800 is a joke. Even though the CPO warranty is only good for one year beyond the expiration of the original warranty, or 100K miles, it has potential value to you much greater than $800.

Having said all of this, if this dealership is your nearest and only option, it might be a good idea to play nice with them. Take it back and have it inspected and make them fix the brakes. Brakes should not squeal. If they insist that all E350 brakes squeal, make them demonstrate on a couple of other E350s.

I would think that a business that admits something as potentially self-incriminating as this is actually displaying something most businesses rarely display. Something called integrity.
