My 1st MB: an '86 300 SDL
I'm in my 20s and just picked up my first MB, a clean Nautical Blue/Java 300 SDL with about 260k. As a lifelong resident of southern CA, I wanted a local example (i.e. no rust issues), and I found a 1-owner right here in Pasadena. A few issues (mainly the electrics) are presenting themselves. So ANY info on these V126s, particularly the 300 SDL, would be truly appreciated. Other than knowing that it's rated @ 143 hp (CA version) and about 201 lb/ft torque, I'm fairly clueless. Any info or links to articles (Car & Driver, Road & Track, or other) would help me to better understand my new toy.
By the way, the electrical issues I need help with are:
sunroof (tilts, but no longer slides- occurred since purchase [motor still works])
window switches (all 4 near the gearshift have fallen loose from their cradles in the wood console. Do I need to find a salvage console for my existing switches?)
slow/intermittent rear passenger window (switch contact, vacuum, or both?)
interior lights (none work but the one nearest sunroof button, but I haven't checked bulbs)
light display @ sunroof switch/reading light assembly (blank, no lights at all. Easy fix?)
power seats [fronts only] (work ONLY when their respective door is open, and headrests don't go up/down electrically, yet memory still works)
tranny (1-2 shift is pretty decent, but the 2-3 and 3-4 occur with a slam. How much can this be softened (but not damagingly OVER-softened) by altering its vacuum control?
General questions I have:
Does this car have an LSD rear end?
How often (miles) should I change the oil?
Living in warm SoCal, is a conversion/separate fuel cell necessary should I wish to partially mix Veggie Oil into the factory diesel set-up?
Thanks, in advance, for anything you can offer whatsoever.
P.S. I ran the VIN through the Russian site, and I'd be happy to post the equipment findings if that's helpful with any of the above.
