WIS and Vista

I have recently installed WIS (09 2005) on a computer with Windows Vista Business 32. Since all those guys on e-bay selling the WIS disks say that Vista is not supported I thought that my experience w/ the installation might be of interest to other members. The thing appears to be not with the Vista or the WIS but with the WIS installer that checks the operating system running on the computer. The installer simply does not know about Vista and gives a stupid message about Service Pack 6. The work around is pretty simple. One simply needs to run the installer in the Windows XP SP 2 compatibility regime and the installer proceeds just fine (I also ran the installer as the administrator which is an additional option one can set by right clicking the file name - though I am not sure if it was any important or not).

Another observation is that disabling one's fire wall and / or virus protection software might be important. My laptop came with the Norton Internet Security and other Norton Security tools and it appears that they do not like the WIS. I disabled Norton both for the installation process and am disabling it every time I run the WIS. Otherwise it just does not work and appears to be not responding. The problem, however, like I said is with Norton and not with Vista. Perhaps there is some work around to make them work together but I have not figured it yet. Still, I am able to run the WIS on Vista (w/ disabled Norton protection) and have not noticed any problems so far (The final note: I run all the WIS applications in XP SP2 compatibility mode and as the administrator).

Of course, I am just sharing my experience and make no guarantee explicit or implied that this method will work on your particular computer.

Nice tips, thanks for sharing.

My experience with Norton is that it uses a bit more overhead and can be more intrusive, but so long as you're off the internet when you disable it to run WIS you ought to be fine.

Had your WIS been a bit more current, you wouldn't have encountered any issue at all. WIS installs (once User Account Control is turned off) and runs perfectly in Vista.
