Possible fuel pump failure C180, 2001

My 2001 C180 was driving as usual when I stopped but then when I tried to start up again the engine appeared to fire then died. Seems like fuel starvation but there was no warning. Does anyone have any thoughts? I'm told it could be the fuel pump but I am also told the pump is really reliable. Certainly I can't hear any noise from the pump but it would help if I could get the seat out to check. How does the rear seat come out? Seems to have hinges at the front but I cannot find any release mechanism to allow it to lift?
I'd appreciate any help you can give me.

Thanks for your help. I can't even find the fuel tank. I guess it is under the back seat but how does that come out? I've looked for release catches and tried just pulling it up but it seems to be held by something in the middle. I cannot here any noise like the pump working anywhere around the back of the car, in the trunk or near the back seat so I really want to get in there and hit the tank!
