Question 1997 C280 overdrive question

I recently purchased a 1997 MB C280 with 155,000 miles. The shifter indicates 4 speeds. From takeoff, it shifts 3 more times which would appear to end in 4th gear. It does not shift in to overdrive, and seems to run high RPMs at 60-75 mph. First, does this car have an overdrive? I've heard different opinions. Second, is there a torque converter with a drain plug on this model? I plan to have the fluid changed, as I do not know if the previous owner ever did. Also, how do you check the tranny fluid level with no dipstick provided? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hey Brad, I am experiencing the same problem with my 97 C-280, Did you find out any answers to your questions? I see there were no replys but was wondering what you did to solve the problem? We were thinking about flushing it ourselves but I have the exact same questions you do. If you could let me know what you did to correct the problem it would be very helpful, thanks...

You should have the 722.6 transmission with 5 speed but the car will start off in 2nd gear, the dip stick you can buy. Some were fitted with the 722.4 but not sure which, I would need your vin # to check for sure and check the torque converter plug question.

Thanks Eric, I will try to get a dipstick from our local Eurocar place in town, he is a nice guy maybe he has one I can buy or borrow. I him check out the car when I bought it and I have taken it to him twice for an estimate on the brakes and a water pump. $1100 for the brakes, $1400 for the pump, my stepson is a big rig mechanic so we bought the parts and we did both jobs for under $300. My stepson and I can do most jobs but we like to know everything before we go in so we do not have any surprises, the brakes were standard except for the brake sencors which were still good, the pump had that one bolt that was a bear but we managed. That was one of my concerns buying the car, as long as I coul do some minor stuff like brakes, oil, plugs etc. because they see a Benz and want to charge outragous prices. I have done a transmission fluid and filter change on my ford ranger and it was not that bad, just all the bolts on the drain pan. I need to get a book and a manual on this car. I would think that with all the "idiot" lights on the dash, one that tells you when a headlight is out, oil, water, brakes there should be one for transmission problems. IDK. Thanks again, Tony

There are no instrument cluster warnings for the transmission. If there is a transmission fault the car will go into limp mode, which means locked in second gear and no more than 2000 rpm.
