Keyless doorlock barely working - even w/ new batteries.

Over the last month, my keyless entry seems to be fading away.......which I thought was just the batteries in the key fob running down.....but I installed two new batteries today and it still barely works....

Only works if I'm standing very close on the driver's side.

Any idea what could be happening.

Not clear about your response...but if you're asking if the key starts the car....the answer is yes.

It's a 1999 E300D (W210). But the remote key is a replacement,....one of the chrome/black type.

I've seen a couple of other threads about this same issue....i.e. fading radio range on the key, even with good batteries....but none had a definitive fix.

I think it sometimes helps to clean the key window, but I have forgotten what the best cleaner is to use and have never had to do that. I found that when I bought my new chrome key, the range got better right away but I am using that as a backup and rarely use the new one (2 old keys came with the car that that still function as intended). I really didn't need a replacement, and still don't, but there was a really good deal on here for those which is, unfortunately, no longer in effect.

FYI: The Smart Keys will still start the car even with completely dead batteries.
