Post 1986 300SEL, Taipei, Taiwan

I joined the forum a while ago, looking for solutions to a variety of issues with the 1986 300SEL I had just bought. Besides the language barrier, there aren't very many old car enthusiasts in Taiwan, so getting information and help is difficult. Forums like this have been enormously helpful.

This car was an impulse purchase. I'm not particularly mechanical, but I love beautiful things. There are few cars more beautiful than the W126 or the R107 (I used to have an 85 280SL when I lived in California, before moving to Taiwan).

The schmuck used car dealer where I got it had the odometer rolled back and a really bad paint job done, which from a distance looks ok, but closer looks show the imperfections. Still, overall, it wasn't in horrible shape. It runs relatively quietly and doesn't burn oil. It did need a few new things, like all old cars. I had the fuel pump relay, the ignition control unit, the air flow sensor and the A/C compressor replaced.

The only remaining "issue" I'm trying to take care of is a rough idle. I'm also going to have the Benz dealer do a complete re-paint.

As I mentioned earlier about living in Taiwan, reliable service is really hard to find. To be frank, people here will cheat your socks off. It's all about doing things as cheaply as possible, with no consideration given to quality. My only choice is to rely on the local Benz dealer, who speaks English and treats me about as fairly as I can hope for.

I put some pictures of the car in the member gallery and will update it when the re-paint is finished.
