SL320 Oil change

Just purchased a like new SL320 and will do most maintenance myself.

Is Synthetic oil recommended. Car has 74,000 miles.

Does the motor splash pan have to come off to find the filter and where is the filter.

Any grease zerks(fittings) on this car?

Just put a new top on and rebuilt most hydraulic cylinders, new tires, Everything works. Total joy to drive a REAL car. AND it gets great gas mileage.

It's the 21st century--synthetic oil is the norm.

Your car requires an oil that meets Mercedes specification MB229.3 or MB229.5

All around best bet is Mobil 1 European Formula 0W-40

It's really a mistake to change oil on a Mercedes by draining from the bottom. The cars have been designed since the 1970s to have the oil extracted via vacuum via the dipstick tube.

This means you don't have to take off the underneath sound panels, you don't have to replace any washers, you have no risk of stripping threads, and you have much less risk of personal injury.

I prefer these, but there are others out there.

Filter accessable from the top. Should be driver side rear of engine if the straight six, drivers side front if the V6. You need a tool to remove the cap that looks like a filter but isn't. Filter is paper only, and o-rings are changed in this operation. This link covers the V6, but the straight six is very similar.

No grease zerks.

See following (your car is chassis 129, usually called R129)
