Another new guy on the block...
I am a new guy on the block who has finally found his dream car after over a year of searching and talking to a LOT of guys with cars for sale all over the USA. Whew, the search was fun; but, I am glad it is done. The economy has brought a LOT of special cars out of garages and put them on the market. I am fortunate enough to have found one of those special cars normally "not for sale for any price"... (drum roll)... it is a pristine 97 SL600 Sport - black over two-tone tan (Mercedes "mushroom" code 565) which I bought on Halloween (10-31-08) - no trick... the car was my treat to me! It had only 28,500 (Carfax certified) miles on it. There are NO rock chips in the paint and the leather interior looks showroom new! I have ALL the maintenace and service records from the day it was purchased (11-12-96); and, I have ALL the Mercedes documentation for the car available at the time of purchase, including the original window sticker. I drove the car enough to determine if there were any apparent mechanical problems before taking it in for the 30,000 mile service by a trusted Mercedes technician. He changed all the fluids - motor, transmission, differential, steering, brakes, coolant, hydraulic, and even the windshield washer solvent. The only problem was a faulty softtop ECU which my service technician thinks was a result of the hardtop never being off the car; therefore, the softtop had never been exercised. The wiring harness was checked and found to be very pliable with no areas of hardening (the first tell tale sign of problems to come); therefore, no need for replacement (yet). We all know the wiring harness was designed to be biodegradable by Mercedes in their effort to minimize pollution of the environment; therefore, since it WILL need to be replaced - the only question is WHEN? My technician replaced the stock thermostat with one which will maintain a lower temperature of the engine coolant. He thinks that, in combination with the Mobil 1 synthetic oil, will increase the life of the wiring harness and delay the inevitable failure ultimately caused by the baking the wirng harness through the combined effects of engine heat and exposure to the sun... tick tock! My comfort is in the fact my extended warranty (4 years or 40,000 miles) covers wiring harness replacement; so, when the time comes the cost of replacement will be covered. The cost of the repair will more than reimburse me for the price of the extended warranty; which, I think is GREAT. I have read many threads on this forum and find a lot of the information to be quite useful... some to be merely entertaining... and (yes) some to be a bit questionable; however, this is food for thought that is not fattening, right? My "Thanks" (in advance) to all for your patience and understanding regarding my questions and comments yet to be posted as I am sure some will fall into the last of the three catagories I have noted. Ha. Life is to be enjoyed every day... take some time to play as you travel down the Road of Life and drive safe along the way!
