buying a 2005 C 230

Hello all,
I am working on buying a 2005 (or something around there) C230. Does anyone have any advice for potential problems to look for?
Are there any chronic problems that the C230 has?
I like the supercharged 4cyl engine, but the salesman is kind of pushing the 6cyl. Is one better than the other?
About 6 mos ago I bought a 1988 300 E. I bought it because it was cheap and in good shape. I fell in love with the car. I have never driven a car that rides so well. Even with 236,000 miles, this car is amazing. The car feels like a tank, but handles like a sports car.
The only reason I want a newer one is because I am afraid that this one will need a lot of work to keep it up since it is 20 yrs old and has a lot of miles.

I bought a 2003 c230 with 49,000 miles on it for about $13,000. I am up to 60,000 miles and have not had one problem. Only had to do preventative maintenance on it (about $500). Mine is a four cylinder and I love it. It is supercharged so if i need a quick punch, it is there. Without having to fill my tank everytime I hit it. I get about 24-26 mpg. If you are looking at a six, then this would obviously be lower. I guess its whatever your looking for - speed or afforability. The four is plenty quick and is just as sleek as the six. In my opinion, stick to the four!

I forgot, the only problem I have had was when I disconnected the battery, I lost control of the sunroof. Ive been told to bring it in and re-sync it. This was my fault though, this problem usually doesnt happened.

i have a 06 C230 and love it. once again i think people are supporting the idea that the 4 cyl are way faster than the 6's. it is slightly true but its not a night and day difference like many make it out to be. i test drove both extensively, multiple different models from many different years. the 4 is more punchy, but the 6 is more smooth and torque driven. the gas milieage is close too, i get 30 on the highway and 22-23 in the city.

i think what your salesman was referring to is that some people abuse the 4 cyl bc they think its supercharged and its a racecar. when i was doing my research i found that more 4 cyl 's had maintainance issues at 80-100k miles, so if you plan to keep your car for that long keep that in mind.

if i were you i would get the newest car i could that was in the best shape and had the best colors/options out of all the cars you look at. look at each car as a whole package, dont focus on one issue. i had a huge pro/con list for each car i was considering, it helps to write it all down so you can see your thoughts for each car. its common knowledge that some of the earlly C classes had maintanence issues and as time goes on they have straightened them out, every year gets better.

By 2005 most of the known problems for the car were said to be resolved. I have the 4cyl and it gets damn good gas milage and actually has a good amount of power for it only being 1.8L. The only reason the salesman is probably pushing the 6cyl is because it is newer and costs more. Sounds like he is just trying to make more off of commission.

This one threw me... I have probably looked at 15 C230s so far. I looked at a 2006 that didn't have a power seat! I realize that this is the "low end" of the Mercedes family, but no power seat! How are they not going to make power seats standard? And the difference in pricing is crazy too. I thought the MB dealer here would be a good place to shop, but they are way over NADA pricing. I figured that they would probably be a little better because they would most likely be trade-ins where someone was just upgrading. But I can't justify paying 3K - 6K above NADA for it. Most everywhere else is 2K below NADA. This has been a real eye-opening experience. I have bought many cars in my lifetime but this is a whole new adventure this time. My plan is to keep this one for about 10 years. I think I have the fever though and will probably upgrade to an E class eventually. Budget permitting.

I've seen a bunch of c230's without power seats. The MB dealer is always over priced. When I bought mine, the same year car with about identical milage was $4,000 more. I would just save your money and buy one at a different dealer.

get it from another place, have it checked out by a good mechanic, and look at a 3rd party warranty. you can still take it to the MB dealer to get the work done with most of them.

also consider that the dealer price is just a starting point. times like these they just want to sell cars. be willing to leave a few times so they know you are serious. come back and ask if they really want to sit down and have a conversation. dealers are always going to be the most expensive though, thats just how it is.

The C230 is not a very good car. It is OK at best. The build quality is OK and the electronics are unreliable. You can do much better for your money (An 05-06 BMW 325i comes to mind). Don't expect 300E reliability or tank build quality or a car that will last for 20 years. It just isn't going to happen. These were cheap budget cost cutting cars.

Because an 05 325i blows an 05 C230 out of the water in the design, electronics, available factory features, and most importantly build quality department (and I'm not a BMW fan-boy, in fact I hate the new Chris Bangle BMW's and would never recommend one). The reliability is also better, but not Lexus. The build quality is what really gets me on these two cars. The C is cheaply constructed with low end materials and poor fit and finish. The 325i features fine quality wood, leather, carpet, panel fit and just general overall craftsmanship. It feels like a much more expensive car.
