Silver Arrow

I'm new to this site. My father bequeathed me his 2002 SL500 Silver Arrow. I would never have bought a Mercedes for myself. It's a lovely car, but the maintenance is pretty steep - compared to my Corolla... And it sounds like there are some quirky things that got worked out in successive models. I guess this is one of the last models made exclusively by Benz.

I'm interested in any tips or info or reasons why Mercedes is worth the money.

If you try to find a logical reason for owning a Mercedes, it won't be there.

Let's face it, all anyone needs is a car like your Corolla, or a Hyundai even. (aside from special passenger carrying or hauling needs). It's hard to find a justification for buying or owning a car that costs more than $20K.

People drive Mercedes for many different reasons. Some for status and the special feeling of riding behind the three-pointed star. Others appreciate the German approach to car building and the technical sophistication. Some appreciate the handling and ride. For myself, I've always liked deluxe cars and have owned a variety of nice rides in 40 years of driving. Mercedes was just the next step in a progression that includes Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick, Cadillac, Audi, an a variety of collectible/special interest cars.

I think there are two kinds of car owners. One kind regards cars as appliances like a dishwasher or refrigerator and looks for practicality and efficiency. The other kind sees cars as being special, marvelous mechanisms that can transport you figuratively and literally to a place in your dreams.

What kind of car owner are you? If you can answer this question, then you can determine if your Silver Arrow is worth the money. Welcome to Benzworld.
