2002 SLK320 keyless remote doesn't work

When trying to leave work last night I pressed the unlock button on my keyless remote - nothing happened. I tried several more times with no luck. I figured the batteries were dead and replaced them. I went through the sync procedure and it still didn't work. My wife came with the spare key and it didn't work either. When I unlocked the door with the key and opened the door the alarm went off. Do I have to take the car to the dealer or can they reprogram the remote without taking it in? Any other suggestions for getting the car to work would be appreciated.

Do a search of the R170 forum. I am sure you will find the answer there.

Since neither your main or spare key work that rules out the keys. I'd say the car is not communicating with the keys and it's probable the car's IR receiver is bad. What I don't understand is why you set off the alarm by using the blade key. Someone has to look at the car, and if you trust your dealer, that's where I would take it.

another problem with my slk230 04 key

Funny I saw your post- I was actually on this website looking for the MB roadside assistance telephone number....exactly one week ago on Sunday I had the same problem- my key did not respond and would not open my car door. When I put thekey in manually the alarm went off. The roadside people came and we replace the key battery. ( could not find my spare keys anywhere). He had to disable the car -did something underneath the roof of the car and said he had to reprogram the alarm...then the key worked- all good except my radio had to be recoded.

I went to the MB dealership and ordered a new 2nd set of keys ($147.00).

Today I went out to my car and the same thing happened again. Now I know it is not the battery as I have a new one so something is going on.....and I am going to have to make another call to MB roadside assistance~

Let me know what you find out!

A 2004 car must have a key that works both with radio and infrared. Next time the key fails to open/close doors I would suggest pointing with the key to the IR receiver at the driver's door handle (some cars have it on both sides). IR does not work from far away and if the key IR beam is not pointing to the IR receiver at the car.

This reveals if the issue is at the RF communications only. The key receiver antenna (amplifier) is often an issue.

If the car always starts fine, then it is not the IR part at the key as the car authenticates the key via IR. Note that the key battery is not needed when the key is in the ignition slot.

EIS may also fail, causing problems with remote locking/unlocking but in this case the car should also fail to start (occasionally).

My '05 CLK 500 {convertible} misbehaved in same fashion,
remote key works while pointing to the IR on passenger door only,
it'll open the trunk/boot from a close {3foot} distance,
nothing like the 150feet before this happened.
also the radio doesn't pick up but the strongest channel.
so the MB-tech told me its the radio-amplifier, that is located under the dashboard,
and I'm cautious about having the dashboard removed.
any suggestions on best plan of action?
or if the amplifier is accessable, could I avoid having the dash removed?
Thanks in advance.

'01 slk 320 with the exact problem as the thread starter. I don't have diagrams in the fuse boxes. Any suggestions on which I should look at? Did anyone get this resolved?

Edit: Fuse 4 for me. Pulled every fuse and tested. It wasn't situated correctly. So far so good.
