I bought a 1988 560SL sight unseen from ebay, a scary thing to do. There was more wrong with it than I thought there would be BUT a lot less wrong with it than the seller probably thought. I too spent about $500.00 at a trusted Indy mechanic to give it a good look over. He changed all the fluids and gave it a general good bill of health except for a few items; cruise control, climate control, cam cover leaks and one or two other items.
I was able to repair everything myself with parts from this site (FASTLANE), Performance Products and ebay. I have far less than $1000.00 total in this car and it is my daily driver. I have now had it a year and put about 11000 miles on it. It is the most satisfying car I have ever owned.
Bottom line is Go For It with one caveat. If you are not prepared to do much of the work yourself, it can be very expensive. The dealers will charge an enormous amount of money for parts and labor and in my opinion, few know what they are doing on this car. It is 20 years old and most of the dealer mechanics have moved on long ago to more modern cars. A reliable Independent is much better but it will still cost a lot if they are expected to do everything. Labor rates are at least $100/hour anywhere.
The 107 body cars come in many flavors. The 560SL is the latest, last and best in my opinion if you want a car to drive but be prepared to tinker.
