Unhappy Transmission Leak

On a road trip heading to the Grand Canyon my 1985 380sl starting leaking Transmission Oil. I pulled over before she was totally dry and a truck picked us up. Apparenlty there was a leak in the transmission oil pump? The garage are going to take the transmission out and send it to a specialist to get fixed. The whole is going to come close to $2800 or more, depending on what parts need replacing. (Ouch!)

My question is, should i look at getting a reconditioned gearbox, or is better to pay this company to fix mine based on a total cost of say $3000. About $800 is going to the garage to pay them to take the gearbox out and put it back in.
