Question replace key battery M-Class

I am trying to replace the key battery in my 2001 M-Class SUV. I bought two 3 volt C2025 batteries but they don't work in any combination I put them in. It looks from the vague picture on the key that the positive sides face the back of the key.
Any ideas out there.
Thanks.

Did you read from your manual which batteries should be used and how those have to be placed?

My chrome keys do use CR 2025 batteries, did you have a typo when you wrote C2025?

The only w163 battery I had changed was on the old 98. Took it to Radioshack and they did it.

The CR2025 is the correct battery. However, the remoted themselves are notoriously unreliable, especially if they have been exposed to moisture...or heat...or cold...or dryness...or harsh stares. Really, they are just unreliable. If fresh batteries don't fix it, it's a good chance that it may be dead

Are they unreliable really? So far I haven't had problems with a single key and I've had quite a few smart keys. But I have never had to put a new battery either. I do try to avoid dropping keys but fail sometimes.

The issues I'm aware are mainly the big components loosing soldering contact, like the coil that powers the key in the ignition switch and the button switches. Those are not difficult to repair. Bad corrosion from moisture may cause problems that are not easy to repair.
