Introducing Stan from Fullerton, CA

I have lived in Fullerton, CA for about 7 years. I bought a pre-owned 1998 ML320 three years ago and enjoyed it very much for local travel and our trip to Denver in September 2006. Initially we had no mechanical porblems, however, this year things went seriously wrong with the SUV.

First the serpentine belt went out and destroyed the upper pulley (plastic) in the process. This was a very expensive repair for a fan belt replacement. Then the car had a total ignition power failure in August. The headlights and instrument panel lights worked, but we could not restart the car after it shut itself down while we were driving.

Attempts to jump start the car failed. The battery checked out as good, but the starter would not even click when the key was turned in the ignition. Right now my ML 320 is still parked in my carport awaiting a solution that would repair it that costs less than the $4,500 estimate given by a local Mercedes repair shop. The disgnosis was to replace the fuse box, the AAM, the ECM, the ignition, and all door locks. I was told that "all 8 keys had been used by the previous owner", and the car would not accept an additional key beyond the factory-set 8 key limit.

Any suggestions about this repair situation would be greatly appreciated.
