Horsepower doesn't tell the whole story. Mercedes tunes the engines to deliver high torque readings. For example, the E550 makes 381 horsepower and 391 ft-lbs of torque. It's the torque that give you the office-the-line performance. They could tune for higher horsepower at the expense of torque. This also allows for an unstressed engine and long engine life.

Mercedes' V8s have comparable redlines to their V6s and should get fairly comparable HP/liter numbers. By way of comparison, the Lexus V8 also makes 380HP, but from only 4.6L. Both the Lexus V8 and Mercedes V6 are direct injection engines, which is why they're so powerful, but for no clear reason the Mercedes V8 wasn't updated (which I expected, since that's what MB usually does). Perhaps Mercedes is going the way of BMW, replacing its big V8 with a ~4L twin-turbo engine like in the new 7 Series, so they didn't want to bother spending money upgrading it. That makes me wonder why they bothered spending the R&D dollars on the V6, if as the other poster suggested they're going to an all-turbo lineup in less than 2 years.
They spend the R&D dollars on the V6 as it will be the BIG motor in the near future. For the C and E it will most likely be the only big NA motor in the lineup. Everything else will be blown to some level, either smaller or built off that block.

By the way, the Lexus website shows the GS460 only making 342 HP and 339 ft-lbs of torque.

So with the E550 doing 0-60 in less than 5 seconds and the quarter mile in the mid 13s, it can hardly be called slow. These numbers compare favorably with some high-price dedicated performance machine.

I was thinking of the LS460: 380 HP, 367 lb-ft of torque. It's rather amusing that their "sporty" sedan makes less power than their luxury sedan. In another bizarre move, the sport suspension is only available on the long-wheelbase LS460.

Other than the G-class, where is the old low output SOHC 3 valve V8 engine still used? The new modern DOHC 4 valve variable valve timing V6's and V8's all have relatively high output per liter of displacement.

The new V6 has direct-injection, which the V8 lacks. Adds 10+% more power and better fuel economy. Another 40-50 HP on the V8s would be mighty fine.

Which V6 has direct injection today (not the one in new 09 SLK350)? That would be a nice upgrade for sure.
