I may have been involved in a record for shortest distance before wrecking a new car. In 1955 I was a parts chaser for a Lincoln-Mercury dealer. My vehicle was a WW2 war surplus Jeep. A man picked up his brand new Chevy V-8 at the dealer's on 19th St, drove one block west and turned north in one block. At 14th St me and my Jeep were in the center lane, ready to turn left. New Chevy owner, impressed with the power of his new car, decided to jump the light buy taking the Southbound lane just as I was turning. Didn't hurt the Jeep much, but really screwed up his brand new car, totally caved in the front and punctured the radiator, steam all over the place. Needless to say, he was beyond irate. Told me he was was good friends with the owner of my company and he would have me fired. When I got back to the shop and told what had happened, the BIG BOSS said "Don't worry, If he was really a friend, he wouldn't have bought a Chevy!"
