92 190E Sportline.. worth it ?

I recently went to meet someone who was selling their 2.6 92 190E Sportline, right off the bat i have to say that the overall presentation of the car was unbelievable! the exterior was incredibly clean compared to most that i have seen, there was however a little ding on the side that would cost me no more than 150$ to fix..and the interior.. all i have to say is that i was breathless! the leather was in absolutely perfect condition with no cracks or discoloration, it was like it came out of the Benz dealership. Now comes the bad part, we took it out for a little testdrive and noticed a few things... it is an automatic transmission, and when it shifted from 2-3rd there was a semi-loud "TOK" noise.. now this in no way sounded normal and i have a very good feeling that it was transmission or diff related. Now the other thing was that when i floored it, it didn't seem to pick up much power, it started to around 3-4000 rpm but it seemed to have a weak start. Now these seemed to be the only issues...

The guy has claimed to of recently changed the Head gasket, timing chain, tensioner, water pump & alternator. He is also giving me the original rims with new winter tires on them... the car currently has 315,000 km on it and he lives in a rural area with long clean paved roads. He is asking 3,500$ Canadian for it and it is negotiable.

Keep in mind that he has also offered to let me take the car to any garage of my choice for a full inspection.

Now who hear thinks that this would be worth it ? and what kind of problems could i be getting myself into if i were to buy it?? (price range ?)

I have attached a picture of the car.

A car thats over fifteen years old, has over 190,000 miles, is down on power (you are comparing this to another 201 with a 2.6, right?), and makes a 'semi-loud "TOK" noise' during gear changes . . . . . . . . .

I'd take it to the nearest dealer and pay whatever they want for a full inspection. They can check things, like whether the exhaust is about to fall out, if the AC works, the suspension needs work (if the Konis/Bilsteins/whatevers that the car was shipped with have been replaced with K-Mart yellows), if the great looking paint is original (or been spotted four times), which body panels are original, if the cooling system is rotted out, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. Then you can take that list of busted parts and negotiate a fair price.

Of course, if the car actually is pristine, this will be the confirmation you need to pay whatever he's asking.

BTW, a rebuilt 722.409 transmission with torque converter is about $1500, plus core, and shipping. And installation.
